How to look after your lawn in Autumn

Many homeowners think lawns need less care in Autumn because the grass grows slowly. Well in fact, just the opposite is true. Grass is absorbing energy, moisture, and nutrients getting ready for the winter. You need to give it attention in these months to get it healthy for the next year.

You must keep mowing the lawn and watering it. As you get towards the end of November lower the blades to the lowest setting for the last two cuttings of the year. This allows more sunlight to reach the crown of the grass, stopping the leaves turning brown.

This is the best time of year to aerate the soil to oxygenate, water and fertilise the grass roots. Leaves must be raked off the lawn as soon as possible before they form an impenetrable mat that will suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.

Now is the time to fertilise your lawn for future growth, as the grass leaves grow much more slowly as the weather turns cool, but the grass roots and rhizomes continue to grow quickly. Rhizomes are the horizontal plant stems that lie just beneath the soil’s surface, they are important because they produce the blades of grass above the roots below. Applying the fertiliser now will provide essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots and keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start next spring.
